Easter Sunday 12 April 2020
Grace and peace to you all from God Our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ our Risen Lord in communion with Holy Spirit, one Eternal God.
LIKE THE BLIND WE GROPE ALONG THE WALL, FEELING OUR WAY LIKE MEN WITHOUT EYES. AT MIDDAY WE STUMBLE AS IT WERE TWILIGHT; AMONG THE STRONG, WE ARE LIKE THE DEAD. ( Isaiah 59:10 )
FOR IT IS LIGHT THAT MAKES EVERYTHING VISIBLE. THIS IS WHY IT IS SAID: – WAKE UP, O SLEEPER, RISE FROM THE DEAD AND CHRIST WILL SHINE FOR YOU ! ( Ephesians 5:14 )
Easter is the time when God turned the inevitability of death into the invincibility of life. It happened as “morning has broken” and light came forth, revealing the fact of Resurrection. The empty tomb became the symbol of the Christian Faith and Hope and Love. It tells us about a new life that comes at a time we do not expect and reminds us that all the experiences of pain, grief and dying are overtaken by the presence of Christ, the One who was crucified and now is alive.
The Resurrection is not a divine “get-out-of-jail” free card that immunises people from pain, suffering or death. To jump too quickly to Resurrection runs the risk of trivialising people’s pain and seemingly cheapens or nullifies their sense of loss. This is why the Son of God had to be born human, to suffer and die, in order to make the impossible possible and the invisible visible. Through the Light of the World, God, whom nobody has ever seen before becomes visible in the Risen Christ. Without Him we just grope along the wall and stumble at midday as if it were twilight. The Risen Christ makes everything visible, revealing the unlimited Love of God, given to “whosoever” believes in Him to not perish but have eternal life.
Experts warn that the Coronavirus is likely to peak in Britain at Easter, with thousands more infected and to cause the worst chaos since World War II. As Jesus’ disciples were hiding at Easter morning with the doors locked for fear of the unknown ( John 20:19) , we still are in self isolation, fearing the worst of this COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic, missing our Easter worships and Holy Communions in our church or even the Sunrise Service at the Lump. As to His disciples long ago,- the Risen Christ now comes to us in our lockdown and offers the same, saying: Peace be with you ! Indeed,- how much we need the peacefulness of our hearts to be restored by the power of His Holy Spirit, accompanied by the revelation of His wounds in the Holy Communion,- which has to be DELAYED for us this time, till we meet again.
If we think only of the things that are visible, we are bound to see life that way. But there is another way. The Bible says of Moses: he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible ( Hebrews 11:27 ). Robert Louis Stevenson tells of an old crofter, who once was asked by someone how he could go on doing the same hard work, day in and day out. The old man answered: He that has something ayont (beyond) need never weary.
Many of us will ever remember Her Majesty the Queen’s faithful and comforting words, addressed a week ago : We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return. We will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again !
AMEN.
Let us pray:
Dear Lord,
The Church is locked, but let our hearts be opened to Your Presence; there let us make your Easter Garden, plant it with faith, hope and love, and let the heavy stone of the deadly lockdown be rolled away. Give us your Resurrection-power through which Your Son rose again and His followers could bounce back from despair and hopelessness. May that glorious message assure us, however low life may bring us and however hard we fall, You will lift us up to new horizons. When strength fails and faculties diminish, advancing years taking their toll, remind us that You bring new beginnings – life that will never fade. When hearts are broken, lives wrecked by sickness, fear, hurt and sorrow, reach out to all who feel they cannot carry on, and give them strength and renewed confidence in these hard times. Be with the Leaders of the World in all their decision-making, bless Her Majesty the Queen and Her Family, support the Prime Minister and the Governments of our land. Be with the Christian Church Universal in all its branches, with our Church of Scotland in its Presbyteries and Congregations. Bless Your Church here in Portree and all our sisters and brothers in Skye and everywhere. Be with our loved ones and all whom we’ve never met nor will meet and give us a blessed Easter, through Jesus Christ our Risen Lord. AMEN.
Let’s say together The Lord’s Prayer: OUR FATHER, WHO ARE IN HEAVEN…
May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us both now and for ever more.
AMEN.
HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL !
Sándor, your Minister.
Foodbank Update
At this testing time we felt it appropriate to update you on the Foodbank.
We have had a huge increase in demand this year prior to the start of the pandemic affecting us directly.
In 2019 we distributed 1076 bags and by mid March this year we had already distributed 296 bags.
Since then demand has soared. Food donations have fallen in the short term with people making less trips to the supermarket and we urgently seek your support, this still being our prime source.
You can see from first photo, the gaps in our stock reserves.
We have however been overwhelmed by the efforts of the community to assist and have had renewed financial support.
Photos 2 & 3 show our new stock and some volunteers after we secured an order from a wholesaler via local retailer, whom we are grateful to.
At times like this we turn to scripture and in Luke 9 v16-17 we have these words-
‘ Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied.’
Jesus fed the hungry that day and we seek your prayers that he will guide us today so that the vulnerable in our community will be fed.
The Foodbank are indebted to the Church for the full use of the hall at present and as a committee we send our sincere thanks.
Remember the message we regularly hear and so true that God is simply just a prayer away.
Take care and every blessing to you all.
Mary, Mogie and Roddy (Foodbank Committee Members)
Palm Sunday, 05 April 2020
Hosanna ! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord !
…SEE, YOUR KING COMES TO YOU, RIGHTEOUS AND HAVING SALVATION, GENTLE AND RIDING ON A DONKEY…
(Zechariah 9 : 9)
…THE GREAT CROWD THAT HAD COME FOR THE FEAST HEARD THAT JESUS WAS ON HIS WAY TO JERUSALEM. THEY TOOK PALM BRANCHES AND WENT OUT TO MEET HIM, SHOUTING : HOSANNA ! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD ! (John 12 : 12 – 13)
On the week before His death, burial and resurrection, Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on a donkey as a symbol of being the Prince of Peace. A large crowd was gathering in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover Feast, sacrificing lambs at the Temple as a remembrance of their deliverance from the Egyptian slavery long ago, and believing in the coming of the Messiah,- God’s Anointed Saviour – of which the prophets had spoken. With anticipation and hope they welcomed Jesus as their Messiah and King. Hosanna !- they shouted – a prayer formula which means HELP-US-NOW . Then… within days…they rejected Him and sentenced Him to crucifixion on a cross. They had a strong concept already fixed in their minds as to what was expected of the Messiah and how he would rule – and Jesus didn’t fit into it. They were in a … SPIRITUAL LOCKDOWN.
All these people and situations are classic examples of FAILED BELIEF SYSTEMS. There are many who have had wonderful glimpses of the truth regarding Jesus and His Kingdom, but because of false conceptions and preconceived ideas, their belief became distorted or even destroyed.
Palm Sunday 2020 brings us a renewed chance to turn to CHRIST with FAITHFUL DESPAIR as we shout the familiar HOSANNA/ HELP-US-NOW.
CORONAVIRUS helps us to realise HOW REALISTIC THE INVISIBLE IS . OUR GOD, whom nobody has ever seen, is the ALMIGHTY CREATOR, SUSTAINER and SAVIOUR of All. As Lord of lords and King of kings He RULES OVER ALL IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH ! He is, and will be always, in control of all happenings and revealing Himself to us in Jesus Christ.
A number of years ago a story appeared which told of an Alaskan man who found a beautiful rock in a stream and used it as a doorstop in his cabin. Years later a geologist visited him and noticed the doorstop, recognizing that it was in fact the largest lump of gold ever found.
As with the man who failed to recognise the gold when he was holding it in his hands, – Palm Sunday 2020 offers us a new opportunity to recognise the TRUE NATURE of our GOD to whom we can cry out under the deadly threat of this invisible COVID-19.
– in the name of Jesus:- HELP US NOW , LORD !
LET US PRAY:
Assist us, Merciful God, as we shout Hosanna . Grant your grace as your world struggles to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Bless the doctors and nurses and all care workers as they try to help and heal the infected. Comfort those who have lost loved ones, give strength to the fearful, protect the vulnerable and elderly and deepen the insight of those who are still not taking seriously enough the danger of this invisible Evil. We pray especially for the billions in Africa and Asia with less developed health-systems than ours. Bless the Christian Church Universal in all it’s branches, our Church of Scotland in all it’s Presbyteries and Congregations. Be with your Flock here in Portree as we put our lives and future into your Hand. Save us and keep us safe with all our loved ones, whether close to us or far away, and strengthen our faith to greet and believe in Jesus Christ who came to us in Your Name to seek and save even the lost.
Amen.
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name…
MAY THE BLESSING OF GOD ALMIGHTY, THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT BE WITH YOU AND REMAIN WITH YOU BOTH NOW AND FOR EVER MORE !
Sandor, Your Minister
Sunday 29 March 2020
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
THE LORD IS CLOSE TO THE BROKENHEARTED
AND SAVES THOSE WHO ARE CRUSHED IN SPIRIT.
A RIGHTEOUS MAN MAY HAVE MANY TROUBLES,
BUT THE LORD DELIVERS HIM FROM THEM ALL.
(Psalm 34 : 18 – 19)
There is something ridiculously contrary about us humans: – When you are safe at home, you wish you were having an adventure far away, but when you are having a holiday trip abroad, you wish you were safe at home. In our present lock down this seems very appropriate as does the teaching of a Christian philosopher (S.Kierkegaard): Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward. Sometimes, the only way forward is to look back to what God has done in your past. He may have shaken you, but he never abandoned you. The promise of Jesus today is clearer than ever: I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
The invisibility and spreading pace of this COVID-19 disaster is shocking.
What have you learned from what is happening?
What concerns you most ? – Yourself? – Loved ones? – Future in general?
Many say: – Life will never be the same again. In what sense? Not being able to travel around the world any longer, your comfort zone being disturbed, the threat of recession with less money and more shortages?
There is time enough to meditate on all kind of things but also to revalue FAITH, HOPE and LOVE as the basics of being a Christian.
Once Jesus said: Why are you so afraid, you of little faith? With this little faith believe in Him, pray in His name and hope that He will help you to overcome your problems.
What have you learned by faith in these difficult days? Are you drawn closer to God? In what way? Are you becoming a better person?
How is your prayer-life?
Keep on praying and believing and remember what I say so often:
GOD IS JUST A PRAYER AWAY!
Let us pray:
Since you, O God, are with us, nothing that has happened, nothing still to come, can rob us of our hope in Christ.
Sustain us during this time of threat and uncertainties.
Bless all the emergency and medical personnel, carers for elderly and the sick, trying to contain the outbreak.
Grant swift recovery to those who are affected and comfort to their families and loved ones.
Encourage those who are afraid.
Bless us as your church in this place and as your children.
Bind us now, more than ever to you and to each other, so that we may triumph by the power of Him who loves us, our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name . . .
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us and remain with us both now and for ever more. AMEN.
Every blessing to You All !
Sandor, your Minister.
