Reverend Lorna Hood

Rt Rev Lorna Hood, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of ScotlandReverend Lorna Hood is the  Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (2012-13). She succeeded the Very Reverend Albert Bogle who vsisted Skye earlier this year.

Mrs Hood, who recently turned 60, is one of three previous Moderators of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland educated at Kilmarnock Academy. During her school years Mrs Hood attended and became a member of St Andrew’s Parish Church as well as being Bible Class Leader. A busy church life also saw her involved in Riccarton Parish Church and its outreach Summer Mission.

In 1971 Mrs Hood intended to become a teacher after graduating from the University of Glasgow but the death of both her parents during this time increased her call to ministry which had always been strong. Mrs Hood attended Selection School and continued studying at Glasgow, graduating as a Bachelor of Divinity (Honours) in 1977.

Mrs Hood’s church career began in Edinburgh as a probationer assistant at St Ninian’s Corstorphine Church and was ordained there in April 1978. In 1979, Mrs Hood was called to Renfrew North Parish Church, where she has served for the last 33-years.

As the former chaplain of the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Mrs Hood has comforted a number of heartbroken parents who have lost their children. She hopes that the investigation by Dame Elish Angiolini will come up with some answers to the Mortonhall Crematorium baby scandal to “bring closure.”

In 2008 Mrs Hood was appointed one of only 10 chaplains to the Queen while in Scotland.

Despite challenges in reaching out to new generations her message for the Church as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, will be one of hope.

Mrs Hood is married to Peter, 59, and has two children, 28-year-old Laura and Michael, 24.
